Brewers All-Star Rookie Pitcher Jacob Misiorowski Lands on 15-Day IL

Brewers starting pitcher Jacob Misiorowski has landed on the 15-day injured list on Sunday just hours before he was scheduled to start vs. the Nationals. Misiorowski is dealing with a left tibia contusion, something he suffered when facing the Cubs last Monday in his most recent start.

Chicago's Seiya Suzuki hit a liner that hit Misiorowski's left shin. Although the rookie pitcher was able to stay in the rest of the game and log 80 pitches, his knee buckled during the game.

Misiorowski landing on the IL is retroactive to Thursday, meaning he will first be available on Friday, Aug. 15. It's expected for him to only miss two starts.

The rookie is having an incredible first season, especially after earning an All-Star bid last month. Through just seven starts, Misiorowoski has posted a 2.70 ERA and a 4-1 record. He has pitched 33.1 innings and has 47 strikeouts. He has only allowed 18 hits and 10 earned runs. Not too shabby for the beginning of his MLB career.

The Brewers called up Logan Henderson from Triple-A to start in Misiorowski's place on Sunday.

Cal Ripken Jr. Gives Glowing Endorsement of Baseball's Move to ABS System

Major League Baseball is set to implement an Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System (ABS) beginning in the 2026 season, the league announced on Tuesday. Each team will receive two challenges per game, and the challenges can be kept if they are successful. The challenges can only be initiated by a pitcher, catcher or batter immediately following a pitch.

Hall of Fame Baltimore Orioles infielder Cal Ripken Jr. was asked about the ABS system coming to baseball next season, and voiced strong support of it in an appearance with 106.7 's show on Thursday.

"I'm for the system," Ripken said. "I really believe the whole game can swing on one pitch. You know, it's a 2-1 count, bases loaded and a slider's gonna be down and away and they get the call—it's 2-2 as opposed to 3-1 with the hottest hitter at the plate. It changes the opportunity. Tennis does a good job, football does a good job with the technology, and we have that here. I guess the question is, 'Is two challenges enough?' So it's going to be a little bit of a learning period and a tweaking period and who knows, maybe it goes to all ABS at some point. But I like the idea."

It will certainly be a change that some fans will support and others—baseball purists—may not. But it is baseball's foray into 21st century technology and the challenge system in a sport that is difficult to officiate is long overdue.

Maresca must drop 5/10 Chelsea star who had fewer touches than Sanchez

Sometimes a game is just that for a club; other times, it feels far more consequential, and for Chelsea, their draw against Arsenal on Sunday evening falls into the latter category.

Enzo Maresca’s side went into the top-of-the-table clash with a point to prove, and while they didn’t win, they certainly proved it.

The Blues were all over the Premier League leaders from minute one, and even with a man down, continued to go toe to toe with the Gunners.

However, while most of the team put in stellar performances and more than secured their places in the starting lineup for the next game, there was one Chelsea star who had a middling day at the office.

The Chelsea stars who cemented their places in the team

As if there was ever really any doubt anyway, Reece James once again demonstrated that he has to start every game he is fit for, be that at right-back or in midfield.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

On top of providing the assist for the Blues’ goal, the unplayable captain also won 11 of 12 duels, played two key passes, won four fouls and completed three of four crosses.

In all, as presenter Olivia Buzaglo put it, it was a “gargantuan” performance from the Cobham graduate.

Speaking of academy graduates, another player who now has to be one of the first names on Maresca’s team sheets is Trevoh Chalobah.

The 26-year-old once-capped international was monstrous at the back against the Gunners, won 100% of his tackles, made six clearances, recovered the ball four times, won five of seven duels and didn’t get dribbled past once.

As if that wasn’t enough, he also rose to meet James’ corner and head it home early in the second half.

Staying at the back, Robert Sanchez again proved that he’s transformed from a liability between the sticks into one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Finally, while he didn’t get a goal or assist, Pedro Neto was undoubtedly the West Londoners’ best attacker on the night.

On top of doing his best to help out in defence, he was a constant threat on the counter and provided his side with a vital outball to relieve pressure towards the end of the game.

However, while most of the team should be starting the next game based on their performances, there was one Chelsea star who probably played himself out of the side.

The Chelsea player Maresca must axe

It seems harsh given the teams’ performance and the fact they held on with ten men, but there was one Chelsea player who underwhelmed on Sunday evening: Joao Pedro.

Now, there is absolutely no denying the Brazilian’s immense talent, nor the fact that, come the end of the season, fans will probably be more than happy with his efforts.

However, what is equally true is that, against Arsenal, the former Brighton & Hove Albion gem was really quite disappointing.

Even before the hosts went a man down, he offered little in attack, and when he was presented with a golden opportunity in the first half, he couldn’t sort his feet out in time. Joao Pedro

Then in the second 45, it quickly became clear that he was not holding the ball well enough for his faster teammates to counterattack, and he was therefore replaced by Liam Delap, who was far better at that.

Unsurprisingly, the watching press were not all that impressed with what they saw. For example, football.london’s Bobby Vincent gave him a 4/10 match rating and wrote that it ‘just wasn’t his day.’

That may sound a little harsh, but the 24-year-old’s match statistics prove it’s not.

In his 55 minutes, the Brazilian took just a single shot, missed a big chance, took 21 touches – 43 fewer than Sanchez -, lost the ball eight times, failed in two of three dribbles and completed just six passes.

Ultimately, while Pedo is an excellent player, he was really quite disappointing against Arsenal and with Delap ready to step in, he should be dropped for Wednesday’s game.

Ex-Real Madrid forward tempted to join Tottenham after 'several' failed attempts

Tottenham chiefs are believed to be assessing their options ahead of the looming January transfer window, which opens in just over a month’s time, and Thomas Frank reportedly wants to reinforce his attacking options.

On the pitch, all eyes turn towards this weekend’s looming North London derby as Frank’s side dream of their first Premier League win at the Emirates Stadium since 2011.

Frank also heads into his first derby clash as Spurs boss in testing circumstances, nursing a crippling injury crisis as he also navigates an inconsistent run of form. With as many as 11 first-team players currently sidelined, the Dane’s squad depth is pretty stretched for one of the Premier League’s most high-stakes fixtures.

His preparations took another worrying turn when midfielder Pape Sarr limped off during Senegal’s friendly against Brazil, though his international manager, Pape Thiaw, then provided a reassuring update which suggested the knock wasn’t serious.

The injury list makes for grim reading. Randal Kolo Muani, Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Yves Bissouma and Kota Takai are just some of the names on Tottenham’s large absentee list, with a good few not expected back in time for the Arsenal clash.

Solanke is apparently “unlikely” to make his return against Mikel Arteta’s side as the striker continues his recovery from minor ankle surgery, while Kolo Muani fractured his jaw against Man United, and it remains to be seen how long the summer signing will be out for.

Mohammed Kudus should recover from a knock to face Arsenal, offering some attacking relief, while Lucas Bergvall could return after completing concussion protocols following his head injury against Chelsea — even if he was sent home from Sweden international duty after a ‘setback’.

Taking into account the club’s fitness issues which have plagued the Lilywhites since the start of Ange Postecoglou’s final season in charge, it is no surprise that they’re considering moves in the winter transfer market to reinforce Frank’s options.

Tottenham tried and failed to sign Man City winger Savinho in the summer, and it is believed that another wide-forward is very much still on the agenda at N17.

Takefusa Kubo could be tempted to join Tottenham in January

Real Sociedad star Takefusa Kubo is a player who’s long been linked with a move to Spurs.

Some reports even suggest that the north Londoners have made ‘several’ failed attempts to sign the Japan international, but they’ve been given some encouragement in the build up to January as it is claimed that Kubo is keen on Spurs as a landing spot.

His contract reportedly includes a £52 million release clause, and journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Football Insider that Kubo could still be intrigued by a move to Tottenham this winter amid Sociedad’s worrying form which sees them hovering just three points above the relegation zone.

O’Rourke also calls Kubo a “top player” who’d tick a lot of boxes for Frank.

The 24-year-old, who left Real Madrid after successive loan spells away to join Sociedad permanently in 2022, averaged more successful take-ons per 90 than any of his teammates in La Liga last season (WhoScored), and more than any Tottenham player managed in England that campaign too.

Predominantly a right-winger, Kubo appears unlikely to threaten Kudus’ place in the side given his exceptional start, but can operate as both a central attacking playmaker and even a second-striker, which may well appeal to Frank.

The presence of a release clause means that Spurs can bypass negotiations with Sociedad by triggering it and entering talks with the player himself.

Kubo’s signing could also open up commercial opportunities in the Asian market, something which Tottenham have missed since club legend and South Korea icon Son Heung-min departed for Los Angeles FC in the summer.

Make no mistake, this could be one to keep an eye on, and Kubo has been tipped to become an eventual superstar by those who’ve worked with him.

Aaron Boone Explains Why He Changed His Mind About One Key Yankees Lineup Decision

The Yankees and Red Sox will face off in an elimination Game 3 on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium as the fierce AL East rivals look to compete for a spot in the ALDS.

New York's lineup was released ahead of first pitch, and there was a notable change to the lineup that took the field in Game 1, when the Yankees faced Boston's star lefty Garrett Crochet. With fellow southpaw Connelly Early toeing the rubber for the Red Sox in Game 3, it was expected that Aaron Boone would insert Paul Goldschmidt back into the lineup for a more favorable matchup. It's something he'd said he planned to do ahead of Game 1 when there was a lefty on the mound.

Instead, however, Ben Rice drew back into the Yankees' starting lineup after his impressive performance in Game 2, and Boone had a perfectly succinct explanation for the change.

"Ben Rice," Boone said, when asked what led him to change his mind on Goldschmidt being at first base against lefties (via Bryan Hoch of MLB.com)

While New York might miss Goldschmidt's defensive prowess at first base, keeping Rice's bat out of the lineup was simply not an option in a do-or-die Game 3. Rice homered on the first pitch he saw on Wednesday night, which was also the first pitch he faced in the postseason in his career. Rice went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in his postseason debut, and he's done enough to warrant a place in the Yankees' lineup for Game 3.

Yankees Lineup for Game 3 vs. Red Sox

1. Trent Grisham – CF
2. Aaron Judge – RF
3. Cody Bellinger – LF
4. Giancarlo Stanton – DH
5. Ben Rice – 1B
6. Amed Rosario – 3B
7. Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 2B
8. Anthony Volpe – SS
9. Austin Wells – C

Rice had a .752 OPS against lefties across 106 at-bats in 2025, well lower than Goldschmidt's .981 (149 at-bats). Still, Boone opted to roll with the hot hand on Thursday night.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. was also not in the starting lineup against Crochet in Game 1, but he has also returned to the mix for Game 3 against Early. The other lineup change for Game 3 will be Ryan McMahon being replaced at third base by Amed Rosario.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:08 p.m. ET.

Angels Turn Ridiculous Triple Play Off Bat of Shohei Ohtani

The Los Angeles Angels battled the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night in the second matchup in the three-game set, and fireworks came to the forefront in the top of the sixth inning, with the best player in baseball at the plate.

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani stepped up to bat with the game tied at six and runners on first and second with nobody out. Ohtani has seen this situation plenty in his baseball career, and it's an opportunity he usually cashes in with a runner in scoring position.

Angels reliever Brock Burke reeled back on the 2–2 pitch and fired a 97 mile-per-hour fastball on the outside corner. Ohtani was all over it, lining it right back up the middle. The only issue was that Angels shortstop Zach Neto was playing in double play depth and caught the screamer right behind second base. He quickly stepped on the bag to double up pinch runner Miguel Rojas and fired to first to complete the triple play with Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing scrambling to get bag to the bag.

What a thing of beauty.

Australia 2020-21 central contracts: who comes in and who goes out?

Marnus Labuschagne is all set to get in, but some other decisions might not be so straightforward

There were the twin pillars of the World Cup and the Ashes being planned for this time last year – the Ashes were retained in England for the first time in 18 years and there was a World Cup semi-final appearance. Given where the team had lifted itself from, that could be considered a significant success. The home summer was a walkover, unbeaten in all matches before the ODIs against New Zealand were curtailed, but one-dayers overseas were tougher with a 5-1 loss-win record. The Test side was starting to look formidable with just a couple of question marks over the batting and finally proper attention was being paid to T20Is.The next 12 months
These are unprecedented times and no one really knows how it will play out. But all we can do at the moment is look at the calendar, which, like last year, has two major events: the T20 World Cup and further progress towards the World Test Championship final. Both remain very uncertain to take place as planned, but India at home followed by South Africa away in Test matches is a mouthwatering prospect if the game is able to resume later in the year.Who could miss out?
Nathan Coulter-Nile – Lost his place in the ODI side after the World Cup, during which he hit a crucial 92 against West Indies but struggled with the ball. He could yet return to the T20I mix, but his ODI days look numbered as planning turns to 2023.Usman Khawaja – Was dropped midway through the Ashes and could not get his place back during the home summer. Could still turn the selectors’ heads with a mass of runs but will likely be back on Queensland’s books.Peter Handscomb was dismissed cheaply on his World Cup debut•Getty ImagesPeter Handscomb – Made just one appearance – the World Cup semi-final as an injury replacement – across the contract period after being unlucky to miss the initial squad for that tournament. Still has time to make another run at the international level so being cut this year wouldn’t be curtains.Marcus Harris – Having been an incumbent opener when the previous list was named, he missed the start of the Ashes and then, like most openers, struggled when recalled and was dropped for the home summer against Pakistan and New Zealand. He will need to deal in weight of runs for Victoria for another chance.Shaun Marsh – At 37, his international career appears over after not playing throughout the home summer following a World Cup campaign ended by a broken arm in the nets.Marcus Stoinis – Endured a poor World Cup, couldn’t make a push in red-ball cricket, and also dropped out of the T20I mix despite a prolific BBL campaign. The white-ball still offers him an international future but he will likely have to fight his way back.Who could come in?
Marnus Labuschagne – does this one need explaining?Matthew Wade – Played every Test over the last contract period after being recalled for the Ashes where he scored two centuries. Still not entirely convincing as a long-term option after a stop-start home summer but he’s also back in the ODI and T20I plans.Mitchell Marsh – One Marsh out, another one in? Mitchell didn’t do himself any favours when he punched the dressing-room wall and missed most of the home summer, but he took five wickets in the last Ashes Test and returned to the white-ball sides earlier this year.Joe Burns – Will the selectors show their faith in David Warner’s opening partner? He didn’t quite make an unanswerable case in the summer, averaging 32, but the revolving door needs to stop.Ashton Agar – Enjoyed an impressive return to the T20I side, with 15 wickets at 13.53 including a hat-trick against South Africa, and was also back in the ODI side albeit with less success. Being a T20 World Cup year could work in his favour, the doubts around the tournament notwithstanding.Kane Richardson – Like Agar, Richardson has been a key cog in the T20I unit as Australia firmly focused on planning for the World Cup. Offers back-up for the ODI side as well.Australia – T20 world champions for the fifth time•ICC via GettyWomen’s contracts2019-2020

Missions accomplished. It was a triumphant year for the women with a comprehensive Ashes series victory in England followed by the heady scenes at the MCG when the T20 World Cup was won in front of 86,000 people it what was one of the last major sporting events before the lockdown. The depth of the squad was tested during the World Cup due to injuries to Tayla Vlaeminck and Ellyse Perry, but after an early wobble – and the rain that cleared the SCG just in time – they came through with flying colours. The next 12 months
The 50-over World Cup is the big prize this time, a trophy that eluded Australia in 2017 when they exited in the semi-final against India on one of the most difficult days of Meg Lanning’s career. However, despite being ten months away, there is already some doubt as to whether it will be staged as planned in New Zealand because of the knock-on impact of the pandemic. There will be one extra contracted handed out this year, so 15 compared to last season’s 14. Will be interesting to see if any onus switches away from allrounders back to specialists with the focus on 50 overs.Who could miss out?
Nicole Bolton – Having featured on the Ashes tour, Bolton did not play during the home season after being unavailable for the West Indies tour, although she wouldn’t have been part of the T20 plans. Was the leading run-scorer in the WNCL and with this being a one-day World Cup year, it could yet work in her favour alongside an impressive ODI record.Elyse Villani – Hasn’t featured for over a year having been unused during the Ashes series and was dropped for the West Indies trip that followed.Who could come in?
Tayla Vlaeminck – Cruelly injured on the eve of the T20 World Cup, Vlaeminck remains a potential spearhead of Australia’s attack for years to come and could develop into the fastest bowler in the women’s game.Annabel Sutherland – The allrounder was the surprise inclusion for the T20 World Cup and showed her nerve by helping earn a Super Over in the tri-series match against England. There is belief in the Australia camp that she can add significant pace as she develops.Erin Burns – Called up for the tour of the West Indies last year and was part of the World Cup squad without getting a game. Impressed in the one-day games against India A in December, but may remain on the fringes.Molly Strano – Added to the World Cup after Vlaeminck’s injury, Strano ended up bowling the first over of the tournament barely 24 hours later. Hugely consistent at domestic level and able to operate at various stages of an innings.
