A Sign Of The Times As Forest Fight To Keep Winger

The man that arrived from Liverpool, with a fairly good reputation, after having just finished a loan spell with Swansea City, Paul Anderson has certainly been a player that perplexes many people, possessing all of the attributes to be a danger, but so far, not fulfilling his potential.

Signing permenantly for Nottingham Forest, for the slim sum of £250,000, after a successful loan spell, pressure wasn’t immediately heaped massively on Anderson, as many appreciated his tender age, and the time he needed to develop under the stewardship of Billy Davies.

In the Billy Davies era, he was a useful asset, as Forest used his admirable energy and work-rate to their advantage, as ‘Ando’ frequently helped out Chris Gunter, and they formed a great defensive double act. Going forward however, couldn’t be more of a different tale. Anderson is superb at running with intent, purpose, and enthusiasm, and approaching the opposition left back as if the game is entering its final minutes. His arms going back and forth from behind his body, looking almost as if he’s ready for the battle that’s about to commence with the full-back, imposing himself early, before he gets a proper chance to flaunt his true colours.

His true colours?

Delightfully bright… Until he reaches 5 yards from a potential showdown with the waiting full-back. “Take him on” and “Beat him for pace”, are the usual cries from the Forest supporters, as ‘Ando’ subsequently either turns back, unambitiously, or runs inside, implementing more rigidity on games that are already narrow enough.

So much now, the Reds fans never expect anything from the No7. Gone are the days he has the ability of getting fans on the edge of their seats, or in some cases, standing hopefully up. All of whom simultaneously put their hands on their head violenty in frustration, as they witness yet another failure as he goes forward.

The majority have learnt to remain firmly in their seats, hands centimeteres from their slightly drooped face, as the cries of disappointment have turned into resigned, slightly exaggerated,  ‘face to legs’ action, as everyone wonders how he still manages to produce the waste.

When rumours of an alleged bust up involving Anderson circulated the net, from an extremely unreliable source, one thought crossed my mind. Many were worried about a potential dressing room split, but that was far from my thinking.

At last, Anderson had proved he can take someone on.

A moment I’m sure would’ve been celebrated, if it wasn’t for Forest’s struggles.

There’s no doubt, in all seriousness, that Anderson is a decent squad member, but no more than that. With Forest currently fighting to keep him, it shows the mess the club is in. Day after day, week after week, stories will keep flowing, of players Forest hope to keep. It sells newspapers, and keeps communication continuing at the club, where they know full well, for yet another summer, they’re set to lose players for free, without anything more than a half-hearted attempt to retain them.

Despite Anderson’s well aired faults, following the loss of McCleary, there’s no natural right winger at the club. Mind you, I notice Grant Holt has granted a transfer request, so he obviously loved the role to the point he’s prepared to drop a league.

We’ve seen what happens when Cotterill puts faith into a young right winger, and plays him on a regular basis. Anderson could be his next successful project, if kept. Since 2009, Anderson’s evidently played with fear in a Forest shirt, affecting his performances. Clear him of those psychological blockages, and he could become a winger that full-backs don’t want to be facing. At the moment, he’s the type of player a full-back goes to bed and dreams about coming up against.

A player the calibre of Paul Anderson, should be a meat and drink contract renewal for this club. The hesitancy of this player is possibly indicative of the direction the rest of the squad thinks the club is going.

Whether fans want him or not, is there to be debated.

But like so many others, it’s whether he wants us, that will probably prove the ultimate downfall.

Chelsea sign Barcelona teen

English Premier League club Chelsea have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Spanish defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu.Romeu, 19, will be in Colombia competing at the Under-20 World Cup for Spain until August 20 at the latest, meaning the deal is not expected to be finalised next month.

With Michael Essien ruled out for up to six months after undergoing knee surgery, Romeu could provide cover in central midfield for the English Premier League side.

“He’s one of the most interesting, bright young players in the number six position, as we like to call it,” Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said.

“And hopefully we can agree personal terms with the player and hopefully he will pass a medical. Oriol is a player, of course with a bright future, he still has to evolve as a player and prove himself as a player.”

Romeu made his full Barcelona debut in May, after featuring for the reserve team 49 times.

Villas-Boas also discussed the future of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The 19-year-old joined Chelsea from Belgian club Racing Genk earlier this month, but was already set to join Atletico Madrid on loan as Chelsea look to further his development.

“Regarding Cortois, it is also a question of time and of deciding where we think it is better for him to evolve as a player, in Spain or in another country,” Villas-Boas said.

“Of course, the Spanish League is extremely competitive and Atletico is a great club to be at, but it is not decided yet.”

Courtois also had the option of returning to Genk next season, but has since passed a medical with Atletico and will spend the 2011/12 campaign at the La Liga club.

Chelsea will play a Thailand Premier League All-Stars XI in Bangkok on Sunday.

Runners-up to Manchester United last season, they begin their latest Premier League title challenge on August 14 with a trip to Stoke City.

The only place for Liverpool to shop this January?

With little money being made available to Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson, the loan market definitely seems as if it will offer Hodgson a small glimmer of hope. “NESV is believed to have been concerned by the millions of pounds hemorrhaged on transfer fees and wages by the club in recent years as it examined Liverpool’s finances as part of the due diligence process carried out before the £300 million purchase of the Anfield side was completed.”

The Americans are also understood to be dismayed at long-term contracts handed to veterans such as Jamie Carragher. They are furthermore said to have voiced concern at the purchase of players such as Robbie Keane and Fernando Morientes without any re-sell value due to their age.

This said it is obvious NESV are wary of spending. However, I’m sure John W. Henry; NESV’s principle owner would never leave his manager Hodgson with little room for manouerve. The former Fulham manager is currently trying to sling shot Liverpool up the Premier League into the Champions League qualification spot. However, It is becoming evident as the season progresses that the present Liverpool squad is nowhere near the strength of its rivals who currently take up those four coveted league places. With money tight the most realistic opportunity for new faces would be through loan deals.

Furthermore Hodgson will not be allowed to add any players without first trimming the squad. Liverpool boast the fourth-highest wage bill in the Premier League – standing roughly at £107 million. Should Hodgson manage to sell come January, even then I am not sure he will see the money as John W. Henry says “We have to be more efficient. When we spend a dollar it has to be wisely. We cannot afford player contracts that do not make long-term sense. We have to be smart, bold, aggressive. It’s a great challenge” Once again lending the idea loan signings may fit the bill.

With Henry and NESV adamant they will not spend come January, the only way I see Hodgson adding to his squad is through loan signings and free transfers. Would Liverpool even be able to land a loan signing who could prove beneficial in their attempt to return to the Champions league in such a short space of time between January and May?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flattered by Aston Villa interest

Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that he is flattered by Aston Villa’s interest in him, and that he has not turned the Midlands side down.

Villa are looking for a new manager after the sacking of Alex McLeish, with the former Manchester United attacker being one of the names in consideration.

Solskjaer met with Villa representatives on Friday in Birmingham, but has rubbished talk that he turned his back on the opportunity.

“It is always flattering. When I was a footballer and United wanted to buy me I was flattered,” he told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, translated to English by Sky Sports.

“Players want to be on the highest possible level and it’s the same with me as manager.

“It may well be that two, three names will sound more interesting than mine and then maybe the mood turns.

“I know that Villa thought it was a bit boring because they wanted the process to go quietly.

“There was some suggestion I had turned them down and all sorts of things.

“I do not know who they (Villa) are considering and what they are going to do.

“I do not go and check the phone to see if they have called me. They will take the time they need.

“It’s not something I think about. As long as I have a contract and work in Molde I do until something else happens,” he concluded.

MLS: Colorado Rapids 0 Houston Dynamo 0

The barren run of the Colorado Rapids continued on Sunday, as the reigning MLS champions were held 0-0 at home by Houston Dynamo.A frustrating match for the Rapids was summed up by a red card showed to substitute forward Quincy Amarikwa after the final whistle, ensuring Colorado have now won just one of their past 10 fixtures.

The Rapids – missing first-choice striker Conor Casey through suspension – had six shots on target from 14 efforts, while Dynamo failed to test Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens in three of their own.

But the points were to be shared at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, with Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall claiming man-of-the-match honours for second-half saves from Drew Moor and Amarikwa.

Amarikwa’s match only got worse when he was handed two yellow cards in a minute, talking his way into a red for animated protestations to referee Baldomero Toledo.

The result keeps the Rapids in fifth on the Western Conference table, and they will bid to overturn their woeful run of form on Wednesday at Sporting Kansas City.

Houston move to fourth in the Easter Conference, with Toronto to visit John O’Quinn Field on Saturday.

Mourinho pledges future to Real Madrid

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has stated that he will not leave the Spanish giants this summer, despite reports linking him with an exit from the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portuguese manager had a successful spell in charge at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles.

With the Blues having sacked Andre Villas Boas earlier this term and yet to decide on a full-time head coach, with Roberto Di Matteo in charge on an interim basis, reports have stated that ‘The Special One’ could return.

Despite links of a return to the Premier League and Stamford Bridge, Mourinho has stated that he has no intention of leaving the Spanish capital.

“I have a contract and there is no reason why I wouldn’t stay,” he told reporters, published by The Telegraph.

“It is better to stay at a club for four or five years. At the moment my future is not important but I think I will be here next season.

“I have a contract and once we arrive at the end of the season I will have time to speak with the players and the directors and we will decide what is best for me, for the club and for the squad,” he confessed.

Real Madrid take on Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, and Mourinho knows he could face his former club in the final.

“The final of the Champions League is the most important thing in football. Wednesday is almost like a long-awaited final, but I see calmness in the players. I don’t like an excess of emotion, nor a lack of it,” he concluded.

The transfer race hots up for Alexis Sanchez

M

anchester United are the latest club to be linked with Udinese attacker Alexis Sanchez as the race hots up for the 22-year old, according to Mirror Football.

Sanchez first moved to Italy for £2 million in the summer of 2006 but returned to South America on loan for the following two seasons. He has since made 108 appearances for the club, scoring 21 goals on the way and has become one of the hottest talents in European football.

Manchester City and Chelsea were first linked with the player but have now been joined by Manchester United and European Champions Barcelona. Inter Milan and Juventus also registered an interest in Sanchez but he is reported to favour a move abroad.

Udinese are set to demand £30 million for the Chilean, who has 36 caps to his name and his currently preparing for the Copa America.

United had hoped to offer £25 million for the player whilst Barcelona are believed to favour a part-exchange deal including strikers Jeffren and Bojan Krkic.

With Manchester City seemingly exploring other alternatives, London club Chelsea could be the most likely club to meet Udinese’s valuation of the player.

West Ham’s Top Ten Transfer Nightmares

As well as producing future England stars through their famed academy, West Ham are also perhaps more infamously known for their more comical signings, especially under the tenure of Harry Redknapp. Without further delay, here are my top ten;

MARCO BOOGERS

Harry Redknapp is often known for his shrewd dealings in the transfer market. What is less known is that for every stellar signing at West Ham, Redknapp also made a howler, and his signing of Dutchman Marco Boogers falls into that category. Apparently Redknapp had the option of either signing Marcus Stewart or a striker he hadn’t actually ever seen play in the form of Boogers. Redknapp went for Boogers in a £1m transfer. What followed were 4 substitute appearances, including a sending off for an outrageous challenge on Gary Neville within 90 seconds of coming on, followed by Boogers disappearing to a caravan site and being declared mentally unfit to be a footballer. He reappeared 2 seasons later playing for RKC Waalwijk.

SAVIO NSEREKO

Having signed for a club record fee of £9m in January 2009, the then 19 year-old Ugandan-born German national was touted by West Ham’s then technical director Gianluca Nani as the next big thing. The problem was, he wasn’t, and even if he was, West Ham didn’t let him hang around long enough to find out, selling him to Fiorentina for around £6m in the summer of 2009. That’s a £3m loss over 6 months. Mind you, West Ham will get 50% of any sell-on fee, and managed to get Manuel Da Costa out of the deal.

CARLOS TEVEZ/JAVIER MASCHERANO

The Carlos Tevez aspect of this may be slightly controversial considering, according to UK Law, he single handedly kept West Ham in the Premier League to the tune of £30m. But bearing in mind in the season prior to the arrival of the Argentinean duo, West Ham had come within a Steven Gerrard screamer of winning the FA Cup and had finished 3 points away from a European place in the league and the whole affair is put in perspective. Enter Kia Joorabchian with Tevez and Mascherano in the summer of 2006. Having upset the balance of the team so much that manager Alan Pardew, who job seemed fairly secure prior to their arrival, was sacked in December 2006, Mascherano subsequently left for Liverpool in January and Tevez, who for most of the season struggled to find form, found himself as a talisman towards the end of the season. Considering the trouble his arrival caused, the least Tevez could do was score 7 goals in 9 games at the end of the season to keep the Irons up. However, the effects of this transfer resonate long after Tevez’s departure as the club is still having to pay compensation to Sheffield United.

FLORIN RADUCIOIU

Signed at around the same time as fellow Romanian Ilie Dumitrescu, Raducioiu flattered to deceive with his performances. Catching the eye during the 1994 World Cup he was snapped up by Redknapp in the summer of 1996, with the then West Ham manager noting the striker was aptly-named because his displays for the club were “worth about two bob”. After clashing with Redknapp because he had gone shopping with his girlfriend on a match day, the Romanian was soon on his way back to Espanyol having only made 14 appearances for the Hammers.

PAOLO FUTRE

A fabulously talented Portuguese international winger, Futre made his name playing for Atletico Madrid. When he signed a one-year contract at Upton Park in 1996, no one had told the then West Ham manager Harry Redknapp that Futre would only play in his beloved number 10 shirt, problem was, that shirt already belonged to John Moncur, even though Futre had it written into his contract that he must have the number 10. What ensued was a Portuguese paddy, followed by Futre bribing Moncur with the promise of holidays at his villa in the Algarve. Moncur courteously accepted, Futre had his number 10 shirt and saw out his one-year contract with West Ham, making only 10 appearances. Remarkably Futre and Redknapp still reportedly keep in touch.

Head to PAGE TWO for the rest of the Top 10…

MAURICIO TARICCO

I feel very harsh including Mauricio in this list, but alas, his free transfer from Spurs in 2004 was a nightmare for both player and club. Lining up against West Ham’s bitter rivals Millwall on his debut, Taricco lasted 27 minutes before tearing his hamstring. The Argentinean then offered to cancel his contract at West Ham, effectively going into retirement. West Ham manager at the time Alan Pardew noted that; “This is one of the most honest acts from a player I have experienced in all my years in the game”. Taricco is now the assistant manager at Brighton and has registered as a player wearing the number 27 shirt, perhaps in honour of the number of minutes he lasted as a West Ham player.

JOEY BEAUCHAMP

One of Billy Bonds final acts as West Ham manager was to secure the signature of Joey Beauchamp. Signed from Oxford United in 1994 for £1.2m, Beauchamp was heralded as one for the future. He may well have been, but just not at West Ham. Citing the daily commute from Oxford as the principal problem, Beauchamp decided to call it quits having never donned the claret and blue in a competitive fixture.

KIERON DYER

This transfer could still turn out to be a dream as Dyer is still at the club, but it is seemingly highly unlikely. Injury prone even prior to his £6m move from Newcastle in 2007, Dyer subsequently suffered a double leg break in a League Cup tie against Bristol Rovers in August 2007, and in 4 seasons for the club, has only featured in 24 games. On a reported salary of £83,000 per week including image rights, West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan suggested Dyer follow Dean Ashton into retirement.

He was a loan signing, what could possibly go wrong? For me after scoring the winner at White Hart Lane he could do whatever he wanted, but, alas, this wasn’t the case for Harry Redknapp and after 9 games he was sacked by the then West Ham manager after missing training because of a night out on the sauce.

JAVIER MARGAS

I was a huge fan of the Chilean when he played for West Ham from 1998-2001, but the nightmare side of him came when he disappeared. No one at the club had any idea where he was, and around a month passed before his whereabouts were known and he turned up back in his native country. Needless to say this signalled the end of his career at the east London club. Having opened his own hotel in Chile he has said any West Ham fan can stay there for free. He has also appeared on a reality TV show in his native country and now owns Chilean Dictator Augusto Pinochet’s armoured car. Nice.

So, that concludes my top ten, there are many more, so if you feel I have missed out anyone, feel free to add to the list.

Tim Howard looking for a positive response

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has stated that the players owe manager David Moyes a victory, after losing 3-0 to Liverpool on Tuesday on the eve of the coach’s 10-year-anniversary at the club.

A Steven Gerrard hat-trick ended a nine-match unbeaten run for the Toffees, and the United States international is eyeing a win against Sunderland in the FA Cup this weekend.

“It [Anfield] is never a nice place to lose, but with the anniversary and everything, it’s even more so. Ten years is a lot of results, a lot of highs and lows,” the keeper admitted to Mirror Football.

“We had gone into the game on the back of a really good run, but unfortunately it didn’t end in the storybook way we all hoped. But this is a good team, this is a good bunch of boys, and there is definitely no problem with the character in the squad.

“We will be up for the fight at the weekend, and it would be fantastic to get a good result to give everyone a lift after what has been a long week. It won’t be for the lack of trying.

“Losing derbies always hurts, but we are professionals, we want to see it out, so we will get back to work and hopefully get a result,” he stated.
