Arsenal player ratings vs Lens: No Bukayo Saka, no party for the Gunners as star forward suffers injury while David Raya drops worst performance since replacing Aaron Ramsdale

Gabriel Jesus fired Mikel Arteta's side ahead but the loss of the England winger left them toothless in attack against the French minnows

Arsenal slipped to a first defeat of the season in the Champions League at Lens despite taking the lead through Gabriel Jesus. However, a mistake from goalkeeper David Raya allowed the hosts to equalise before the Gunners suffered another blow when Bukayo Saka limped off injured.

The visitors struggled for attacking inspiration without their talisman on the field, something Lens sensed as the game wore on and which offered the hosts encouragement to attack. It was little surprise, then, when the impressive Elye Wahi fired Lens ahead with just over 20 minutes left to play.

Mikel Arteta responded by throwing on Ben White, Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah, but Arsenal's patient probing came to very little and Lens held on comfortably for a deserved three points in their first Champions League home game for more than 20 years.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David Raya (4/10):

At fault for the first Lens goal with a poor pass out that was far too casual and allowed the hosts to intercept and eventually tee up Thomasson.

    Takehiro Tomiyasu (4/10):

Came in for White at right-back but didn't look entirely comfortable and offered nothing going forwards.

    William Saliba (7/10):

Stood out once again the heart of the Arsenal defence. Great in possession and loves a duel.

    Gabriel (5/10):

A loose pass almost gifted Lens a second goal after the break.

    Oleksandr Zinchenko (6/10):

Seemed to be everywhere in the first half and did well.

    Midfield

    Kai Havertz (5/10):

Might have been expected to kick on after scoring his first Arsenal goal last time out but couldn't influence proceedings and had a quiet game.

    Declan Rice (7/10):

Couldn't quite get to Thomasson for the equaliser but otherwise was one of Arsenal's better players. Always wanted the ball.

    Martin Odegaard (6/10):

Gave the ball away too often and couldn't provide the inspiration that Arsenal so badly needed.

    Attack

    Bukayo Saka (7/10):

Shrugged off injury to play and came up with an assist for Jesus after pouncing on a loose ball. Forced off just after the half hour which will be a blow to the Gunners with Manchester City up next.

    Gabriel Jesus (7/10):

Broke the deadlock with a clinical finish on his first effort on goal and seems to love the Champions League. He has now been involved in 16 goals in his last 16 Champions League starts.

    Leandro Trossard (5/10):

Arsenal will have wanted more from Trossard down the left. Had a couple of chances but was let down by some tame shooting.

    Manager & Subs

    Fabio Vieira (4/10):

Came on after just 30 minutes for the injured Saka but offered little. Barely involved.

    Emile Smith Rowe (5/10):

Managed a shot on goal but it never really troubled the goalkeeper.

    Ben White (5/10):

Another late sub when Arsenal were already 2-1 down.

    Eddie Nketiah (5/10):

Thrown on too late to make any difference.

    Reiss Nelson (6/10):

Came the closest to a late equaliser but saw his effort blocked by the goalkeeper.

    Mikel Arteta (5/10)

His decision to start Saka yet again despite the forward limping off for the last two games backfired spectacularly. Arsenal lacked attacking inspiration without Saka and Arteta could not find a way to get his team back into the match after going behind.

‘Can’t go anywhere near that!’ – Why golf superstar Rory McIlroy snubbed investment in Leeds as Ryder Cup winner holds out for ‘0.0001% share’ in Man Utd

Rory McIlroy has explained why he could not “go anywhere near” investment at Leeds, but is still hoping to get a “0.0001% share” in Manchester United.

The Northern Irishman, who recently helped Europe to Ryder Cup glory in another epic clash with the United States, is an avid follower of the Red Devils. As a result, he could not bring himself to join fellow golfing superstars Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in forming part of the £170 million ($207m) takeover of Leeds by the 49ers Enterprises group.

While steering clear of the United outfit in Leeds, McIlroy would like to get involved with the one in Manchester – with the Glazer family having opened themselves up to offers that now see Sir Jim Ratcliffe leading the race to acquire a 25 per cent stake in the club. McIlroy added: “I would love to have taken a 0.0001% share. If another opportunity comes my way I will definitely look at it. To be able to own even a tiny, tiny, tiny percentage of the club you grew up cheering on would be very cool.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

McIlroy is not involved in football just yet, but he is one of the investors – alongside the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney and Trent Alexander-Arnold – in the Alpine Formula 1 team. He has said of joining that group: “It's a great opportunity, I've always been a big fan of F1. There has been quite a bit of Northern Irish/Irish connection there with Eddie Jordan and Eddie Irvine back in the day. It's always been something I followed. And then when this opportunity came up, I just think with the popularity of F1, how much it's booming in the US in particular – and I have invested in a few things – but this has got more of a story and a journey. It's no surprise they went to market and got some investors in but I think it obviously stabilises the team and it gives them some confidence going forward. F1 as a whole they do it so well. Golf could learn quite a bit from F1 in terms of some of the set-up stuff and how they do things.”

'He should've scored six' – Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson criticised by Mauricio Pochettino despite bagging hat trick in eventful Tottenham win as Blues boss provides Christopher Nkunku injury update

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has criticised Blues striker Nicolas Jackson, despite him scoring a hat trick against Tottenham on Monday.

  • Jackson bagged hat trick in Spurs win
  • But Pochettino not happy with striker
  • Nkunku likely to take spot when fit
  • Getty

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The London derby was the most chaotic Premier League game of the season so far, with Spurs ending the contest with nine men and VAR creating plenty of controversy. Chelsea eventually triumphed 4-1, with Jackson grabbing a second-half hat trick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Despite scoring three times, Jackson was criticised for his poor finishing in the clash, and these sentiments were echoed by his manager on Friday. Pochettino said: "It's easy to say: okay, scored three goals. It's a process. He's still young, needs to improve. Okay scored three goals, but should have scored six. The most important is to keep calm and relaxed and he is going to improve with time. Nights like Monday help him not to be too much nervous and approach a game in a different way."

  • Getty Images

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Due to Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja being ruled out with injury, Jackson has likely played more minutes than he was expecting during his early Chelsea career. The frontman now boasts five Premier League goals from 10 games, but with Nkunku set to return to full fitness after the international break, he could see his playing time limited.

Pochettino provided an update on the Frenchman's availability ahead of his side's Premier League clash with Man City. "We had some conversation and he said to me I want to be ready for after the international break, Newcastle. I asked him yesterday and he said 'hmmm', and I said you are liar. It is close and he is really well. We are happy with him."

Beckham received his very own flock of chickens for Christmas, which led Victoria to get the former England international a book called, 'Keeping Chickens for Dummies'. The couple set up a hutch and pen for the ex-footballer at their Cotswolds farmhouse to add to the beehive they have there. Last week, Beckham showed his "excitement" at finding eggs and "learning what they need" and now this magazine will just add to his enthusiasm for the whole process.

Real Madrid warned Kylian Mbappe 'could be a problem' as Emmanuel Petit launches bizarre rant at PSG superstar after growing tired of transfer saga

  • Set to join Los Blancos in the summer
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mbappe formally communicated his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season to his team-mates last week and there are reports in Spain that suggest that the Frenchman is heading to Real Madrid in the summer.

World Cup-winning French star Petit, though, remains unsure about Mbappe's next move, as he claimed he is tired of a transfer saga that has been going on since 2021. The former midfielder even warned Real Madrid that signing the 25-year-old "could be a problem" for them.

  • WHAT EMMANUEL PETIT SAID

Speaking to , the ex-Arsenal star said: "I have no idea what is going to happen and to be honest, we are 67 million French people who have no idea of what Mbappe will decide at the end of the season. Mbappe said two weeks ago that he will give his answer soon before the end of the season. So, I have no idea if he’s going to stay in Paris, there is so much speculation, so much talk, agreements, things like that. So when you talk about Mbappe it’s always that you open the door and you never know what’s going on. Maybe he will go to Madrid, maybe he will stay in Paris, maybe he will go somewhere else.

"If Mbappe goes to Madrid that could be a problem. Not just in terms of wages in the dressing room, but in terms of leadership as well. Bellingham has been amazing just like Vinicius Jr, and if he goes to Madrid, he will have to play as a striker, just like what he did recently for PSG. But we all know that this is not his best position. There are so many questions and no answers."

He added: "We are all tired in France. Every single six months, it’s always the same story on the table. Yeah. Is he going? Is he going to leave? Is he going to stay? Is he going to leave? Did he have a nice breakfast this morning? Did he have a nice poo poo? We are so tired of it as well in France. I can understand that players are also getting annoyed about this situation because all the attention is focused on Mbappe all the time. We are not talking about PSG, we’re always talking about Mbappe. So it could be a problem for some players to manage this situation. And that’s why I said I’m so tired of speaking about it every three weeks."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Los Blancos reportedly got in touch with the France captain in January to check if he was still keen on joining the Spanish club next season. After they got verbal approval, the club formally approached the player, and his mother and agent Fayza Lamari, to discuss the details of his contract. Mbappe is likely to become the club's highest-paid player as he is set to sign a five-year deal that will see him earn €15m (£13m/$16m) to €20m (£17m/$22m) per annum, with bonuses on top based on performances.

    WHAT GRESSEL SAID

USMNT star Gressel has said, per , of the iconic foursome that continues to capture the imagination in Florida: “Of course they are good friends. We all know that. That's why it's completely normal that they are a little more connected. They have achieved a lot together and the families get along well too. That's why naturally they work a lot in a group of four. But they are very integrated, they take the whole team with them and make a lot of jokes. We had barbecues together. This is a completely normal team structure, like in any other team of which I was a member.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While considering Messi to be one of the guys in Miami, Gressel admits that working alongside the all-time great does take some getting used to. He added on that process: “Of course at first it seems a little surreal. You don't even know what to expect. And it's hard to realize all this right now. And that's how it still is, if I'm honest. It's hard to put into words what you feel. But so far everything is going well, he is a very nice guy. It is easy to talk to him, and even joke. And of course the quality of the place is incredible. Being there so close is really great and a great experience for me.”

    DID YOU KNOW?

Gressel went on to say of the aura that surrounds Messi: “The first time I saw him he was in the locker room. I came in, said good morning and introduced myself, I said I was Julian. And he said, 'I'm Leo', in such a way that everything fits together. He's a normal boy, a shy boy who doesn't talk much now. But it's crazy, generally crazy to play with him. Of course he is an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and, in my opinion, the best player who has ever played. That's why he is special and he also has a special status, which is also completely normal. But as a team-mate and as captain is really good and approachable in a normal way. He's a really nice guy and a normal family man.”

Tottenham: ESPN break Perisic transfer development

According to broadcast giant ESPN, a very interesting transfer development has now come out Tottenham Hotspur involving Inter Milan forward Ivan Perisic.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes attacking upgrade…

Spurs manager Antonio Conte, having guided his side to within touching distance of a previously unthought of top-four finish in the Premier League, also sets one eye on the looming transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Times claim he wants as many as six major signings in the summer ‘at least’ with eight Lilywhites players potentially heading out the exit door.

Sergio Reguilón, Emerson Royal, Steven Bergwijn, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele could be given Conte’s axe among others and it is believed that the 52-year-old wants to bring in a new forward.

The Latest: Perisic development emerges…

Now, as per big name broadcaster ESPN and their reporter James Olley on Twitter, the north Londoners are ‘exploring a deal to sign’ Perisic from Inter as they eye a Bosman move.

Spurs have apparently made contact over the 33-year-old with the US news outlet also reporting that he is open to reuniting with former boss Conte at N17.

The Verdict: Get it done?

Even at 33, Perisic has been integral at the San Siro this season, with former midfielder Fausto Pizzi calling the Croatian ‘incredible’ with ‘no others’ like him in the Italian top flight (via TUTTOmercatoWEB).

A mainstay under Simone Inzaghi, only teammate Hakan Calhanoglu has averaged a higher match-rating per 90 than Perisic as Inter’s ace stands out as one of their top performers (WhoScored).

Landing the attacker on a free deal could come as quite a brilliant quick-fix for Spurs in the forward positions for around one-two seasons before a more permanent solution can be found.

Newcastle: Howe set for disaster on Longstaff

Reports last month suggested that Newcastle United had offered Sean Longstaff a new four-year deal, and lo and behold, he put pen to paper earlier this week, penning what was actually a new three-year deal at St James’ Park.

That previous report had suggested that the academy graduate had ‘sought assurances’ over his playing time under manager Eddie Howe – hence the initial delay in any negotiations – but he does now have a future under the former Bournemouth boss.

Howe had indicated that he wanted the 24-year-old to stay at the club beyond the end of the season – with his past deal set to expire in just over a month – but fortunately, he now has his wish.

The North Shields-born ace made just 15 Premier League starts in the 2021/22 campaign, although that is the same as he managed in the previous season, having failed to really establish himself in the side under both Steve Bruce and his successor.

The 5 foot 11 star had initially burst onto the scene during the 2018/19 season, making nine top-flight appearances and reportedly catching the attention of Manchester United, who were linked with a hefty £50m bid in the summer of 2019.

Longstaff – and teammate Isaac Hayden – had also earned praise from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in that debut season in the first team, with the serial-winning coach stating that his side “could not deal with” the midfield pairing after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

Such displays had seen then-boss Rafa Benitez tip the youngster for an England call-up, although the Spaniard’s subsequent departure – and frustrating injuries for the player – have stunted his progress, with a Three Lions bow now seemingly a long away off.

Nevertheless, the £11.7m-rated man is clearly a valuable asset – having been dubbed “immense” by Chronicle Live journalist Charlie Bennett – with the club possibly now forming a dream duo in the middle of the park.

There will likely be another raft of high profile incomings this summer as PIF look to realise their lofty ambitions, although having a local lad in tow also remains important, ensuring that the spirit of the club is not lost in the coming years.

Newcastle already have Bruno Guimaraes in their ranks but they could add positively to their midfield options in the shape of Jesse Lingard this summer too.

The Magpies very nearly signed the Manchester United attacking midfielder in January but a deal fell through. However, his contract is expiring this summer and there is no sign of a new deal on the table with Newcastle linked again.

Thus, the future of Howe’s midfield could very much look like a Longstaff, Guimaraes and Lingard triumvirate, something that would no doubt spark intrigue and fear in opposition team’s up and down the country.

Longstaff’s renewal, therefore, is not just for sentimental reasons. He has also performed impressively on the pitch of late, ranking in the top 4% for tackles made among midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues and in the top 13% for pressures made.

He may not be a glamour name, but Longstaff deserves to be a key part of Howe’s squad for the years to come and must be unleashed more regularly next term.

Spurs: Paratici set to seal Perisic signing

Tottenham are now closing in on a deal to bring Ivan Perisic to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Independent, who claimed that Fabio Paratici has agreed a two-year deal with the 33-year-old wing-back, who is expected to leave Inter Milan upon the expiry of his current contract at the San Siro in June.

The report added that both Chelsea and Juventus also made offers to the Croatia international. However, Antonio Conte’s meeting with Tottenham’s sporting director on Friday – in which the 52-year-old informed Paratici that Perisic was one of his priority targets this summer – saw contract talks with the player accelerated, and subsequently a £4m-per-year (£77k-per-week) deal being agreed.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

Finally, it is said that the former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich star will officially confirm his final decision on Monday.

He’s “ready-made” for Conte

Considering just how impressive Perisic was for Inter this season, the news that the 33-year-old was a priority target of Conte this summer is hardly surprising to learn.

Indeed, over his 35 Serie A appearances in 2021/22, the £9m-rated talent was in sensational form on the left of Simone Inzaghi’s back five. He scored eight goals, registered seven assists and created 14 big chances for his team-mates, along with taking 1.3 shots, making 1.6 key passes and completing 0.7 dribbles per game.

The £152k-per-week wide man also impressed in a defensive capacity, making 1.3 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and 0.9 clearances and winning 3.6 duels (at a success rate of 54%) per match.

These returns saw the 113-cap Croatia international average a quite astonishing SofaScore match rating of 7.30, not only ranking him as the Nerazzurri’s second-best performer in the league but also as the joint ninth-best player in all of Serie A.

Furthermore, according to FBRef data, the 33-year-old also ranks in the top 2% of full-backs in Europe’s big five leagues for non-penalty goals per 90, in addition to the top 1% for npxG, the top 3% for shots, the top 15% for assists, the top 1% for xA, the top 1% for npxG+xA and the top 4% for shot-creating actions over the last 365 days.

Indeed, it is clear to see just how perfect a fit Perisic would be for Conte’s left wing-back role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. That is an opinion with which Alasdair Gold clearly agrees, as the football.london journalist recently tweeted: “Ivan Perisic would be a big signing for Spurs. Not only as a multi-title and Champions League winner to bring that to the pitch and dressing room with his mentality and versatility but also because he represents a Conte-led change in Spurs’ transfer policy. Ready-made and early.”

As such, to hear that the Croatian has now agreed a deal with Spurs ahead of a switch to north London this summer is undoubtedly fantastic news for everyone involved with the club, with the future at Tottenham looking very bright under the management of Conte.

AND in other news: Paratici now plotting Spurs bid for “deadly” £21m talent, he’d be “perfect” for Conte
