Le Bris could now have Sunderland’s modern-day Arca in "incredible" star

Already, several of Sunderland’s first team members this season are in the running to go down as modern greats at the Stadium of Light.

Indeed, Granit Xhaka is already being spoken of as an “unbelievable” star by journalist Phil Smith so soon into his Black Cats stay, and it’s for good reason, too, with the Swiss international both gritty and creative from the middle of the park.

Both Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete at the back have also been receiving wild praise for their defensive masterclasses, while Wilson Isidor has cemented himself as a fan favourite even further by bagging three goals already this season in front of the passionate Wearside masses.

There is one ace that hasn’t even been mentioned yet, who could even go down as the Premier League side’s modern-day iteration of Julio Arca, with the South American a beloved talent throughout his time at the Black Cats, who always had a way of entertaining fans with skills and tricks aplenty.

Arca's heroics at Sunderland

The wonderful strike above sums up Arca’s entertaining game very well, with the Argentine midfielder often unafraid to maraud forward, before curling home a beautiful effort.

In total, for the Black Cats, who yo-yo’d between the Premier League and the Championship during the now retired trickster’s lengthy stay, Arca would pick up a sizeable 21 goals and 11 assists from 173 appearances, with his ex-Stadium of Light teammate in Matt Poom even hailing the former number 33 as being “very confident” in his own ability to wreak havoc.

Further dubbed as being “different class” by ex-Hartlepool United boss Neale Cooper at the time, it would be down the left flank where Arca would get the most joy, having initially been placed into the side as a left-back on his arrival to England from his native Argentina.

Pushing the skilful 5-foot-9 attacker further up the pitch to a left wing position would, then, prove to be a masterstroke, with the rest ending up being history as Arca became a constant of many a Sunderland XI.

Capable of playing as a central midfielder, too, if needed, there are some remarkable similarities between the £3.5m purchase and a current gem in Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland set-up, with the ace in question hopeful he can go down as being as cherished as Arca over time.

Le Bris' very own Arca

Le Bris does have various tricky players at his disposal at the moment who can serve up a moment of Arca-like genius.

The aforementioned Isidor has looked cool and confident in front of goal in the early stages of the season to put away some tricky chances, while Xhaka has also stylishly gone about his business with three assists notched up from his seven Premier League outings.

But, it’s Enzo Le Fee who could well be Le Bris’ own version of Arca right now, with the Frenchman traditionally a central midfielder option by trade, who has shown off his obvious class for Sunderland – since leaving France behind – when being deployed down the left channel by his manager.

Amazingly, despite making 73 career appearances to date from a central role, the “incredible” midfielder – as he has been lauded by scout Jacek Kulig – has largely been handed chances in the Black Cats’ first team on Arca’s trusty left-hand side, with a promising two goals and three assists coming his way when consistently putting in classy performances from this adopted spot.

One of those efforts would see Le Fee coolly put away a penalty to hand Le Bris and Co. a 2-1 win over Brentford back in August, with the Frenchman hopeful he can guide Sunderland to immediate safety by putting in even more assured displays at the demanding level.

He could even be dreaming of achieving what Arca managed during his debut season in Sunderland red and white, with the Kevin Phillips-led outfit securing a seventh-place finish when collecting 15 total league victories.

Unfortunately, Arca couldn’t sustain that success on Wearside, with Le Fee praying he can offer the same unpredictable magic the South American had in abundance, while also consolidating his side as a Premier League regular in the process.

Gabriel Moscardo completa 18 anos no dia 28 de setembro e a partir dessa data poderá deixar o clube alvinegro rumo à Europa.

Man Utd's "generational" gem is their best teen star since Rooney & Ronaldo

Manchester United have always had some of the best young talents in English football on their books. Of course, a lot of that has come from their academy, dating back to the Busby Babes and the Class of ‘92, and, more recently, the likes of Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.

Yet, that does not mean United’s teen talents are always homegrown. Gerard Pique, for example, was a teenager when he first moved to Old Trafford.

However, the most famous examples of highly-rated teen stars at United who weren’t graduates of their esteemed academy are certainly Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

Rooney and Ronaldo’s stats as teenagers at United

Rooney and Ronaldo joined United a year apart, with the former signing after Euro 2004, and the latter joining one summer prior, in August 2003.

They instantly struck up a deadly partnership at Old Trafford.

Those early days, when the pair were still teenagers, were extraordinary. Despite their age and relative lack of experience, both youngsters took to playing for United like a duck to water.

Despite linking up for 27 goals in the 205 they played together, it might come as a surprise to learn that they only combined once when they were both teenagers, as per Transfermarkt.

That particular strike was Rooney’s iconic effort against Liverpool, teed up by Ronaldo, which saw United win the game.

Individually, they racked up strong numbers for United before turning 20. The Red Devils’ all-time leading goalscorer found the back of the net 21 times as a teenager for the club.

As for Ronaldo, the Portuguese legend fired home 11 goals for United before his 20th birthday.

There is certainly a strong case to be made that United have not had a teen talent as exciting as either Rooney or Ronaldo since the pair turned 20.

However, one of their current players could certainly fit the bill.

The United teen as exciting as Rooney and Ronaldo

The former United duo showed in the early 2000s exactly what it takes to shine for United as a teenager. The bravery and intensity with which you must play, and the pressure you must cope with, can make things tough.

Well, one member of the current United squad who seems to manage those demands well is 19-year-old Frenchman Leny Yoro. The centre-back has shone during his time at the club so far, with Statman Dave going as far as calling him a “generational” player.

After recovering from an ankle injury he picked up last preseason, the former Lille youngster has cemented his place in Ruben Amorim’s starting lineup at Old Trafford.

He’s now played 40 games for the club, with his first goal coming last season in the Europa League against Lyon.

The assured defender has tended to operate on the right-hand side of Amorim’s back three. Analyst H, who works for The Overlap, said he is a perfect fit to play that role due to how “athletic” he is, praising his defensive work in the channels.

But, it is not just the 19-year-old’s off-the-ball work that makes him such an exciting talent. His progressive numbers are a huge standout, particularly when carrying the ball.

Over the last year, he ranks in the top 6% of centre-backs in Europe’s big five leagues for progressive carries, averaging 1.74 actions per 90 minutes.

There is no doubting that Yoro is an exciting talent. At just 19 years of age, he’s cemented himself as a key player in United’s starting lineup, showcasing excellent progressive attributes and intelligent and athletic defending.

It is certainly exciting when a club strikes gold on a talented teenager from outside of the academy.

The last two players to really fit into the bracket are surely Rooney and Ronaldo, but in Yoro, it feels as though they have someone else who can be put into that conversation.

Amorim is turning Man Utd star into their new Rooney & it's not Sesko

Manchester United may have their next Wayne Rooney, but it might be in the form of a player many would expect.

Stan Collymore slams "completely unacceptable" thing he's heard about Aston Villa vs Maccabi

Stan Collymore has weighed in following the controversial West Midlands Police decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending the Europa League fixture against Aston Villa next month.

Decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from Villa Park causes controversy

The decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from Villa Park has been condemned by leaders of the UK’s two most highly-represented parties in parliament, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer taking to X to criticise the move last week.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch was just as unequivocal, branding the decision a “national disgrace”, while also urging Birmingham authorities to re-assess.

However, given that the Israeli side had another game postponed on Sunday, with their derby against Hapoel Tel Aviv being cancelled before kick-off due to safety concerns, it remains to be seen whether the police are willing to change their minds.

Taking to X after news of the derby being cancelled broke, Collymore shared a shocking statistic, having previously expressed anger about his former club being blamed for a situation beyond their control.

The ex-Villa man said: “Maccabi Tel Aviv have had 2 match postponements in the last 266 days for public disorder. Aston Villa haven’t had 1 in 50,080 days (since 8th September 1888, Football League Matchday 1, the birth of global league football). Home or away. Gaslit.”

Aston Villa now looking to sign £26m assist king, Emery thinks he's perfect

The Villans have joined the race for a new midfielder, with Unai Emery personally a keen admirer.

ByDominic Lund Oct 20, 2025 Villa off to strong start in the Europa League

Unai Emery’s side endured a very poor start to the season, but they have since turned things around, winning their last five matches in all competitions, and they are in a strong position to progress in the Europa League, although it is still early days.

The Villans have won their first two matches in Europe without conceding a goal, defeating Bologna 1-0 at Villa Park, before going on to pick up an impressive 2-0 victory against Feyenoord, with Marco Bizot putting in a top performance.

The police’s decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv fans will be an unwelcome distraction heading into next month’s encounter in November, but Emery’s side should be able to pick up all three points, with the Israeli champions losing 3-1 at home against Dinamo Zagreb in their last Europa League match.

'I hold no grudges' – Sammy moves on from TV umpire debate

West Indies coach said the match officials admitted there were errors made during the first Test in Barbados

West Indies coach Daren Sammy said that the match officials have admitted there were errors made during the first Test in Barbados, but insisted he holds no grudges against Adrian Holdstock, who will move from being the TV umpire to on-field in Grenada.Sammy was fined 15% of his match fee and handed a demerit point after he questioned the work of Holdstock, particularly decisions against Roston Chase and Shai Hope, adding he had held concerns from the recent England tour. Chase was also highly critical after the match but has escaped any ICC sanction.”I said I wouldn’t want my players to do that press conference because of the questions I think that would have been posted at them,” Sammy said. “I strongly believed in what I said.Related

Chase calls out 'so many questionable calls' in Barbados Test

“We’ve had further chats [with the officials]. They’ve clarified some stuff. There has been some admission of error as well. This was Barbados and we’re now in Grenada, so we’ve left that behind.”Asked whether he regretted his comments about Holdstock, Sammy said, “I don’t hold grudges. I said what I said, based on what I saw. I’ve been punished for it. I wish Adrian all the best, to be honest. I mean, we’re all human. I have nothing against the umpires. I really wish he has an awesome game.”Australia have not been drawn into any debate around the umpiring, although they have admitted they came out on the right side of it in Barbados. But Alex Carey had fears his diving catch to remove Hope would be given not out when he saw the replays on the big screen.Carey dived full-length to his left to take an inside edge off the bowling of Beau Webster from Hope, who was well-set on 48 in his first Test for three-and-a-half years. It was eventually confirmed as out by Holdstock. Earlier in the game, he had ruled a low catch by Hope from Travis Head in Australia’s first innings as not out.”I thought it was out straightaway, yes,” Carey said. “I wasn’t confident it was going to stay out when I saw the replay, to be honest. It’s been a really difficult shift in the third umpiring in what’s out and what’s not out. Your opinion is different to my opinion.”I thought that was a pretty difficult game, to have five, six, seven 50-50 examples for the third umpire. He’s not going to please everyone up there, but I thought he did a really good job. We obviously know the other side and the other camp was a little bit disappointed with some of them. I understand that.”But I did think it was out. I never thought I fumbled the ball or had any reason to question the decision. It was a pleasing one to take. A good batter as well, who was scoring some runs.”Holdstock will stand with Richard Kettleborough in Grenada and then with Nitin Menon in Jamaica. Kettleborough will be standing in his 93rd Test, going past David Shepherd’s count of 92 as the most by an English umpire.
